Why it matters
We built this company from implementation reality: legacy systems, clinical workflows, service desks, accounting handoffs, approvals, messy files, and teams that need software to reduce work instead of adding another dashboard to babysit.

About
Few technology professionals can claim the range that John Martines has built over 30 years: founder, director, owner, and implementor, often simultaneously. He has built companies from scratch and sold them. He has carried P&L responsibility, led technical teams, and also written the code, designed the integration, and personally deployed the systems that made those contracts deliver.
Today that range shows up in AI that does real work inside the tools a small business already runs: email and calendars, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, QuickBooks, customer systems, phones and text. Every system keeps a person approving anything that goes to a customer, and keeps a record of who approved what. Underneath it is a deep healthcare IT foundation: clinical dictation, electronic health records and connecting the systems of more than 30 hospitals, where privacy and getting it right were never optional. He also built an MSP from the ground up to over 1,500 Datto-monitored managed endpoints before selling it.

Why I Started Applied AI Technology
After decades of watching businesses struggle not with the idea of technology but with the implementation of it, one thing became clear: most SMBs have neither the internal bandwidth nor the specialized expertise to turn AI from a concept into a working system.
The tools are extraordinary. The raw capability is genuinely there. But capability alone doesn't produce results. Connecting it to a real business does. Knowing how to wire AI into your actual data, your actual workflow, your actual problem: that's what separates AI that works from AI that only impresses on a slide.

A Life of Building
John has been writing code since 1983 and working in business technology for more than 30 years, from building AI assistants, workflow applications, vendor API integrations, databases, managed infrastructure, and cloud automation to earlier work in clinical systems, speech recognition, PACS, EMR/EHR environments, and HL7-style healthcare interfaces. That mix gives him both the technical depth and business perspective to architect solutions that actually work in production.

His computer science curriculum was built on rigorous foundations (C++, Assembly language, data structures, SQL, and relational database design) and included a capstone-level project that few undergraduates ever attempt: a complete BASIC interpreter written from scratch in C++, with a hand-built lexer, parser, and execution engine, plus coursework in serial port data communications and computer organization. Most remarkably, in 1994, before the commercial internet was mainstream and more than a decade before deep learning would emerge as a recognized discipline, John completed a formal course on neural networks and artificial intelligence, giving him a foundational understanding of how AI actually works that most practitioners entering the field today simply do not have.
